Balens 60th Anniversary Celebrations

60 years of service is a big number in any business and it just had to be commemorated. A diamond jubilee dinner was therefore organised for 150 people at the Abbey Hotel in Malvern, on Friday 10th December 2010, in order to celebrate the company reaching this tremendous milestone.

Balens have transformed radically over the last 21 years, after David Balen moved the already well-established family business from freehold offices in London to Malvern, as the focus shifted into specialising more and more into the Health Professional  & Well -Being field where the company was pioneering new approaches to insuring these types of client.

He Initially worked in a studio office in his home in 1994, and was joined firstly by Margaret Childs, then shortly after by Jeanette Philips (who are both still with the company).  Fast-forward 17 years and David is now the Managing Director of a fourth generation Family Business involving his two sons, Joe Balen who is now a Director, Josh Balen who is the Commercial Manager and Annie Balen who is David's daughter along with 40 staff, in purpose-built offices spread over 2 buildings. This is indeed a cause for celebration made more so by our sustained ethical growth during the recession and current turbulent times.

The dinner itself, was attended by representatives from a large number of the 200 + associations that Balens looks after, together with insurers, suppliers, staff and local clients.  Many commented that it was lovely to 'put so many faces to so many names'. Entertainment was provided by a table magician, caricaturist and The Roving Crows, an Irish contemporary music group, with drumming performed by our very own Josh Balen. The festivities and bonhomie continued well into the early hours of Saturday morning!

David himself gave an entertaining and lively speech in his usual inimitable style, talking about the history and historical context of Balens, starting in the 6D9818DA-56C0-4406-9AE0-4FBDA3E8CFACs in his parent's home where his father's music friends rubbed shoulders with insurance representatives at the dining room table, and the challenging frictions between business and family life. Professor David Peters, a leading light in the world of Integrative Medicine and Head of Studies in Integrated Healthcare at Westminster University, also spoke, talking about the important and pioneering role that Balens has played in the development of professional standards within the Complementary Therapy field over the last few decades.  He also left many members of the audience crying with laughter over the jokes he told.

The flowers and balloons, the cake and candles, the sparkling toast sponsored by Zurich Insurance plc, all helped to add to the ambience and atmosphere to mark this wonderful occasion. The success of the event was registered by much positive feedback on the evening and for weeks afterwards.
